Abstract

The 18th conference of the Canadian Society for the Computational Study of Intelligence (CSCSI) continued the success of its predecessors. This set of - pers re?ects the diversity of the Canadian AI community and its international partners. AI 2005 attracted 135 high-quality submissions: 64 from Canada and 71 from around the world. Of these, eight were written in French. All submitted papers were thoroughly reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. A total of 30 contributions, accepted as long papers, and 19 as short papers are included in this volume. We invited three distinguished researchers to give talks about their current research interests: Eric Brill from Microsoft Research, Craig Boutilier from the University of Toronto, and Henry Krautz from the University of Washington. The organization of such a successful conference bene?ted from the coll- oration of many individuals. Foremost, we would like to express our apprec- tion to the Program Committee members and external referees, who provided timely and signi?cant reviews. To manage the submission and reviewing process we used the Paperdyne system, which was developed by Dirk Peters. We owe special thanks to Kellogg Booth and Tricia d'Entremont for handling the local arrangementsandregistration.WealsothankBruceSpencerandmembersofthe CSCSI executive for all their e?orts in making AI 2005 a successful conference.

Abstract

This book is written for the students and practitioners who are looking for a single introductory Excel-based resource that covers three essential business and analytical skills Data Analysis, Business Modeling, and Simulation of Complex Problems. The focus of the book is clearly on analysis of problems for decision making, yet detailed explanations regarding how to use Excel tools are provided. After many years of teaching and consulting, it is abundantly clear to me that for most students, a good example is worth its weight in gold. This book contains many excellent examples in each chapter, some simple and others more complex, and there is an abundance of exhibits to guide the student through the maze of steps necessary for each analysis. The content is quite diverse: ¢ data presentation the Feng Shui of spreadsheets, effective communication and collaboration ¢ data preparation import, scrub, manipulate data ¢ data analysis statistical methods: descriptive, inferential, and predictive, Design of Experiments ¢ modeling deterministic, probabilistic, What-if, Scenarios ¢ simulation quantifying uncertainty, Monte Carlo Simulation ¢ optimization constrained, Linear Programming, non-linear models, Goal Seek ¢ Couple these features with detailed discussions of how to realistically organize and extract insight from complex problems, and I believe you have a unique educational combination in one book.

Abstract

th This volume contains the conference proceedings of the 29 Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence (KI 2006) held June 14-19, 2006 at the Convention Center in Bremen, Germany. KI 2006 was organized under the a- picesoftheAIsectionoftheGermanInformaticsSociety(GI),amembersociety of the European Coordinating Committee of Arti?cial Intelligence (ECCAI). This year, we stepped out of our regular pattern of holding the conference at the end of the summer as we decided to accompany the RoboCup 2006 com- titions at the Bremen Fair and Convention Center with our scienti?c AI conf- ence.Toavoidanunusuallyearlysubmissiondeadlinethatwouldhavecompeted with othermajorAI conferences, wedecidedto publish post-conferenceproce- ings. We received a large number of excellent contributions: 112 papers from 25 countries were submitted. In a thorough peer-review process, the international Program Committee selected 29 full papers that are published in this volume. The contributions cover a range of topics from ontologies to cognition and e- tion, from spatial and spatio-temporal reasoning to machine and robot learning, and from analogies to natural language. Two speakers were invited for keynote lectures: Ramon L´ opez de M´ antaras presentedhisworkonapplyingAImethodstothetransformationofmusicalp- formancesand UlrichFurbachspoke about applications ofautomated reasoning. Their written contributions to these topics are also published in this volume. In addition to the regular conference sessions, six workshop proposals and nine poster contributions were accepted for the conference. The workshop s- sions were held on June 14 and on June 19, 2006. The contributions to these sessions were published in separate proceedings volumes.

Abstract

Militarized Conflict Modeling Using Computational Intelligence examines the application of computational intelligence methods to model conflict. Traditionally, conflict has been modeled using game theory. The inherent limitation of game theory when dealing with more than three players in a game is the main motivation for the application of computational intelligence in modeling conflict. Militarized interstate disputes (MIDs) are defined as a set of interactions between, or among, states that can result in the display, threat or actual use of military force in an explicit way. These interactions can result in either peace or conflict. This book models the relationship between key variables and the risk of conflict between two countries. The variables include Allies which measures the presence or absence of military alliance, Contiguity which measures whether the countries share a common boundary or not and Major Power which measures whether either or both states are a major power. Militarized Conflict Modeling Using Computational Intelligence implements various multi-layer perception neural networks, Bayesian networks, support vector machines, neuro-fuzzy models, rough sets models, neuro-rough sets models and optimized rough sets models to create models that estimate the risk of conflict given the variables. Secondly, these models are used to study the sensitivity of each variable to conflict. Furthermore, a framework on how these models can be used to control the possibility of peace is proposed. Finally, new and emerging topics on modelling conflict are identified and further work is proposed.

Abstract

Vector analysis is relatively young in the history of mathematics, however, in the short period of its existence it has become a powerful and central tool in describing and solving a wide range of geometric problems, many, of which, arise in computer graphics. These may be in the form of describing lines, surfaces and volumes, which may touch, collide, intersect, or create shadows upon complex surfaces. Vector Analysis for Computer Graphics provides a complete introduction to vector analysis, especially within the context of computer graphics. The author shows why vectors are useful and how it is possible to develop analytical skills in manipulating the vector algebra. Each topic covered is placed in the context of a practical application within computer graphics. The book is divided into eleven chapters covering the mathematical foundations of vector algebra and its application to lines, planes, intersections, rotating vectors, vector differentiation, projections, rendering and motion.

Abstract

Graphical queries for the purpose of searching for pictorial information are of growing interest in areas where pictures provide valuable information, including, for instance, design, architecture, and engineering. Sketching graphical queries is a natural way of revealing the visual appearance of objects one has in mind. Björn Gottfried develops computationally effective concepts for dealing with shape, in particular imprecise and incomplete sketched shapes. He exemplarily applies his method using graphical queries to search for historical objects. Specifying objects graphically, he shows that the new method is in fact capable of dealing with imprecise sketches. Generally speaking, the notion of positional-contrast is introduced. It defines how patterns can be robustly dealt with. That is, the new representation distinguishes patterns by how they relate with regard to spatial relations. This notion can be applied for several purposes, including pattern recognition, motion analysis, and texture analysis.
